That depends on the situation. Safety is paramount, followed by comfort and efficient working. Choose a system or combination that works well together.
European industrial safety legislation obliges employers to take measures to ensure that employees can work safely at heights. Where possible, work should be carried out in places where the risk of falling is minimal. When this is not possible, safety measures are necessary to guarantee the safety of employees. In this regard, collective protective equipment (railings and safety nets) are preferred over personal protective equipment (individual fall protection systems). In the Netherlands, fall protection is mandatory when working above 2.5 meters.
Personal fall protection (harnesses, fall arrest lanyards, etc.) should be inspected at least every 12 months. In addition to this annual inspection, a visual inspection is required before each use. Only use personal protective equipment (PPE) that complies with harmonized European Standards (EN). A clear display of the CE marking on the protective equipment, including the applicable standard, is also required.
Not using fall protection when working at height involves considerable risks. First of all, there is the risk of serious injury or even fatal accidents, such as broken bones and head injuries. In addition, companies can receive heavy fines from the labour inspectorate and be confronted with legal proceedings and increased insurance premiums. The lack of fall protection can also reduce the effectiveness of other safety measures and negatively affect the morale and sense of safety of employees.
In short, it is essential to use fall protection to minimise these risks and ensure a safe working environment.
If you notice that your fall protection system is damaged, stop using it immediately. Conduct a visual inspection and report the damage to your supervisor. Have the system inspected by a recognised inspection company and never attempt to carry out repairs yourself. If the system is no longer safe, replace it with a new, certified system. Also make sure you have a maintenance plan for regular inspections.
To choose the right size and type of harness, consult the size chart for an indication. A harness should fit snugly and not be too loose. A flat hand between the strap and the body is often tight enough. Make sure the harness is comfortable and allows sufficient freedom of movement.
Common mistakes when using fall protection are using hoisting equipment as fall protection, combining the wrong components, and lacking rescue equipment or a rescue plan. These mistakes can seriously jeopardise safety and must be avoided.
You can upgrade your fall protection system by switching from a basic harness to a professional harness for better support and comfort. In addition, you can choose aluminum components instead of steel, as aluminum is lighter and more comfortable. Need help? Please contact +31 (0) 75 650 47 50 for all your questions.
